Creativity or Inspiration?

Of all the art forms it could be argued that music is the one which has, historically, been most led by technology.  To go a step further one might say that technology is an intrinsic part of the creative process in that it inspires musicians to move in different and exciting directions. Bartolomeo Cristofori’s invention of the Piano in the early 18th century inspired countless composers, most notably Mozart. The invention of the electric guitar and amplifier in the early 20th century inspired  jazz, blues and rock musicians for the next 80 years. Without a stack of Marshall amplifiers and effects units, Jimi Hendrix would have had to have taken a very different path musically as these inventions inspired and shaped his sound and compositions. Similarly, without the invention of the synthesiser, samplers, and drum machines, much of our electronic and dance music would never have happened. Had they not been invented, we might have remained in a world of wall to wall “prog rock” which, let’s be honest, doesn’t really bear thinking about…

It has been well documented that Duke Ellington got many of his musical ideas from listening to his band improvising as they warmed up for gigs. The composer hears new melodies and sounds and knows instinctively what will work as an idea. However, as musicians and composers, we need to remember the part played by those who create the sounds and instruments that inspire us to write our music. From Cristofori through to Les Paul, Jim Marshall, Bob Moog, and latterly the brilliance of Eric Persing and many others, we should tip our hats to their part in inspiring us in to create our masterpieces.

Creativity or inspiration?  For great music, a little of both is the answer.
